First major monoplane fighter of the IJA, saw service early in the war. Saw service somewhat in the Pacific, against Russia, and in the CBI theater. Intermittent use continued !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Notable for fixed landing gear like the carrier-based "Val" bomber (thus low speed), but a very high rate of turn.

An early prototype Nakajima Ki-12 had an interesting story.
The Ki-12 had a liquid cooled Hispano-Suiza 12Xcrs V12. It also had retractable landing gear, a first for a Japanese aircraft. Also of note were the proposed 20 mm cannons firing from between the engine cylinders and twin 7.7 mm machine guns.
The IJAAF liked the design, but felt it was too complex and heavy. They felt the lack of maneuverability was a concern, and they also didn't want to rely on the manufacturing license for the engine. As a result, the revisions were made to the design. The liquid-cooled V12 was replaced with an air-cooled radial engine. The retractable landing gear was also replaced with fixed gear.
That prototype would eventually evolve into the Nakajima Ki-27.
